# References: What is RWA?

> Real-world assets (RWA) explained: what they are, why they are growing and what tokenization changes.

## 1. What is RWA?

RWA stands for **Real-World Assets**. In DeFi, RWA are traditional assets brought onto the blockchain, so they can be traded, managed and used in decentralized applications.

Common types of RWA:

* Real estate
* Bonds
* Shares
* Commodities and goods
* Loans
* Intellectual property

## 2. Why is RWA becoming an investment trend?

RWA connect traditional finance with blockchain. When assets such as U.S. government bonds, stocks or real estate are tokenized, they can offer:

* exposure to traditional assets from a crypto wallet;
* easier access at lower cost, with fewer intermediaries;
* transparency and on-chain liquidity;
* real-value assets that support the growth of DeFi.

Large institutions such as BlackRock and Ondo Finance are leading the RWA trend, bringing traditional assets onto the blockchain. With RWA, investors around the world, especially in emerging markets, can access traditional assets in a faster, more transparent way.

## 3. Benefits of tokenizing real-world assets

* **Easier access.** Anyone with a blockchain wallet can invest, without complex intermediaries or a bank account (subject to eligibility rules).
* **More liquidity.** Assets that were hard to trade, such as real estate or bonds, can be traded as tokens.
* **Transparency and traceability.** Transactions and ownership are recorded publicly on the blockchain, which reduces fraud and errors.
* **Fractional ownership.** You can buy a small part of a large asset, which lowers the barrier to entry.
* **Automation and lower costs.** Smart contracts can automate payouts, payments and asset management.
* **DeFi integration.** Some RWA tokens can be used as collateral in DeFi protocols.

> [!WARNING]
>
> RWA tokens carry risks of their own: the value of the underlying asset can fall, the token may not track it exactly, and issuer, custody, smart-contract and liquidity risks apply. Using tokens as collateral in DeFi adds liquidation risk. This page is information only and is not financial advice.
