# Scan and Pay

> Which QR codes QR Pay accepts in Vietnam and the Philippines, how to pay one, and the message rule that stops a payment being rejected.

Once you have a QR Pay balance, paying is the same everywhere: scan, check, confirm. The merchant receives local currency.

## Pay a merchant

**1. Tap Scan in QR Pay**

Open QR Pay and tap **Scan**.

**2. Scan the merchant's QR code**

Point the camera at the code. A printed sticker at the counter works the same as a code on a screen.

**3. Check the details**

Check the merchant name, then enter the amount if the code does not already include it. The app shows the amount in local currency.

**4. Swipe to confirm**

Any fee appears before you confirm, so you always see the total first.

## Which QR codes work

| Country | Codes accepted |
| - | - |
| Vietnam | VietQR bank codes, VNPay, MoMo, ZaloPay |
| Philippines | QR Ph |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **In Vietnam only:** QR Pay pays QR codes belonging to Vietnamese account holders. A code linked to an account held by a foreigner will not go through, so ask the merchant for a different code. This rule does not apply in the Philippines.

## Keep the payment message plain

Many banks reject a transfer whose message contains characters outside letters, numbers and spaces, such as a hyphen, a slash, a dot or an equals sign. When that happens the payment fails.

* The in app message keyboard has no special characters, so anything you type is already safe.
* If the merchant's QR code carries a message with special characters in it, ask them for a plain code.

> [!TIP]
>
> If a payment shows as still processing, do not pay again. Wait for the final status so you do not pay twice. More in [Why a Payment Fails](https://docs.fizen.io/help-center/fizen-qr-pay/why-a-payment-fails.md).
